- Empurau or Tor Tambroides, is considered to be the most expensive freshwater fish in Malaysia and is only found in the rivers of Sarawak, mainly in the Kapit and Hulu Rajang areas. Also known as the “King of the River”, this fish has a high commercial value and can cost from RM800 to RM1,500 per kg
The taste of empurau is often described as creamy, savoury, and slightly sweet, with hints of wild fruit. Meanwhile, Lee describes the taste of the empurau she ate as “really tender, melts inside your mouth, and very juicy,” adding that no sauce is required to enjoy it
Some also believe this magnificent fish can keep its owner from danger by dying itself, and is protector against evil and ill luck.
